How Roe v. Wade Gave Us the Right to Safe and Legal Abortion

On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade affirmed your right to a safe and legal abortion. 43 years later, that right is under sustained attack from politicians who want to undo the progress we’ve made.

In fact, this year the Supreme Court will hear one of the most important abortion cases in the last two decades. The case, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, challenges parts of Texas’s clinic shutdown law. The current Texas law imposes medically unnecessary, burdensome requirements on abortion providers and clinics. If the law is upheld, all but 10 clinics in the second largest state in the country will be forced to close, threatening women’s ability to make personal decisions about their lives, health, and futures.

The continued threat to chip away at the Roe decision hurts women’s health and economic security.

That’s why it’s so important today – of all days – to remind ourselves why we have this critical right.
