NWLC Responds to Nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

Posted on July 9, 2018 Issues: Judges & Courts Supreme Court

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“President Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court puts women’s health, equality, dignity, and even lives on the line. It will shift the balance of the Court, and could roll back rights for an entire generation.

“It’s clear Judge Kavanaugh is dangerous for women. He has voted against women’s constitutional rights, including approving the Trump Administration blocking a young immigrant woman from obtaining an abortion. This appalling opinion was Kavanaugh’s audition for the Supreme Court. After showing his hostility to abortion, he was added to Trump’s shortlist.

“What’s more, this entire nomination process was tainted from the start. Trump’s judges were vetted by anti-abortion and anti-ACA groups and, according to Trump’s campaign promises, his nominee would ‘automatically’ overturn Roe v. Wade and dismantle the Affordable Care Act. We must take Trump at his word and every Senator should too. We strongly oppose the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh. This country deserves a nominee who will affirm that the Constitution protects the dignity and equality of all persons, including the right to abortion.”
