The Trump-Pence Administration’s Priority is Crystal Clear – Controlling Our Bodies
Last night, the Trump-Pence administration released a horrific “gag rule” aimed at preventing doctors and other health care providers that serve low-income people from discussing abortion with their patients. By going after Title X-funded providers, this rule jeopardizes the care of more than 4 million people who are struggling to make ends meet.
And then mere hours after releasing this terrible rule, Trump spoke at an anti-abortion gala and touted his agenda to control our bodies by any means necessary – through legislation, by spreading junk science, and by providing a call to elect anti-abortion politicians.
But even more insidious, the Trump-Pence administration is sneakily stacking the courts with people who share their anti-woman, anti-abortion ideology. Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary committee will vote on whether or not to advance Wendy Vitter – a staunch anti-abortion and anti-birth control extremist – to a lifetime position on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. This is the same person who spread junk science (no surprise why Trump chose her) that abortion and birth control are bad for women’s health, going so far as to assert that women who use birth control are “more likely to die a violent death.” She also refused to commit support Brown v. Board of Education – you know, the landmark Supreme Court case that desegregated schools and declared racial segregation unconstitutional. And there are plenty more anti-abortion nominees in Trump’s pocket.
Couple this with all the ways this administration is utilizing religious refusals of health care to deny patients care and it’s clearer than ever that the Trump-Pence administration’s main priority is to control our lives at the most basic level – doing whatever they can to achieve this. But we will fight these attacks, tooth and nail, until we all take back our power and our right to make our own decisions
