The leisure and hospitality sector—which includes restaurants, hotels, museums, spectator sports, and more—is a major driver of the American economy and a source of millions of jobs; this sector alone accounted for 10.0% of the entire workforce in 2019.1 Yet many women working in this sector struggled to make ends meet long before the COVID-19 crisis began—working unpredictable and inadequate hours, often coupled with unpredictable and inadequate tips, in restaurants, bars, hotels, theaters, and more.
