On November 7, 2022, the National Women’s Law Center submitted a comment in response to a proposed rule that aimed to improve Medicaid enrollment, renewal, and eligibility processes.
Medicaid applicants and enrollees, who are disproportionately women of color, disabled women, and women overall, often face an administrative labyrinth when they try to gain or renew Medicaid coverage. As a result, many eligible applicants are turned away from Medicaid, while enrollees may lose or face interruptions in their coverage, ultimately delaying or preventing their access to care. Our comment urged the Department of Health and Human Services to adopt a range of measures that would reduce the burdens on applicants and enrollees and make it easier to get and stay enrolled in Medicaid.
