In February 2022, Iowa introduced H.F. 2309 (renumbered as H.F. 2416) and S.S.B. 3146 (renumbered as S.F. 2342). Both bills seek to bar transgender girls, transgender women, and nonbinary people assigned male at birth from participating on girls’ and women’s sports teams in school. While the Iowa House bill would do great harm to all students in K-12 education, the Senate bill goes even farther in seeking to harm university students as well. NWLC submitted written testimony opposing these harmful bills, supporting local advocacy groups including One Iowa and the ACLU of Iowa. The bills have unfortunately passed through committee review and are currently being considered by both chambers of the Iowa legislature.
