President Trump and Republican Congressional Leadership Shut Down the Government

(Washington, D.C.) Today, President Trump and Congressional Republican leaders failed to negotiate a bipartisan government funding agreement that would address some of our nation’s top priorities, including the full reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, permanent protection for Dreamers, and disaster recovery funding. Instead of focusing on these priorities, they have passed a tax bill that gives millions in tax breaks to the wealthy few and three short-term funding bills that leave our government less stable and create uncertainty for families and children. Their failure to prioritize the needs of everyday families and children has led to the government shutdown.

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“Republican leaders—in control of both chambers of Congress and the White House—have failed our families and our children. For months, they neglected to tackle urgent priorities for our nation—from passing children’s health insurance, to offering permanent protection for Dreamers, to providing long overdue relief to families still recovering from natural disasters. Instead, they prioritized a tax bill that gutted the Affordable Care Act and gave millions of dollars in tax cuts to the very wealthy. Enough is enough. People’s lives are at stake. It’s time for responsible leadership to meet our nation’s most critical needs.”
