NWLC Responds to Trump’s Announcement to Temporarily Reopen Government

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“We are grateful today that this vicious political stunt is temporarily over and thousands of federal workers will finally get paid for their labor. But three weeks of stability is not enough, especially for the lowest paid contract workers like food service workers, who won’t get back pay and are facing serious long-term harm. President Trump must permanently stop pushing this racist and wasteful policy under the guise of national security. This Administration has been riddled with discrimination and disrespect for people’s basic rights, safety, and bodily autonomy – and the government shutdown and its effect on families across the country will forever be a hallmark of its legacy. We call on Congress to continue to keep the government open and not yield to a border wall, and put American values and decency over political gamesmanship.”
