“This afternoon, President Trump announced his intention to declare a national emergency to secure funding for his border wall. The president’s actions are a disgrace to this country. They serve only to confirm that the true emergency our nation faces is a lack of moral leadership in its highest office.
This declaration is the latest in a series of attacks on the fundamental rights of all people. It comes on top of a spending bill that contains many other harmful provisions, including a 12-percent increase in the number of people in immigration jails, additional unrestricted funding for the deplorable practices of ICE and CBP, and $1.375 billion for more border militarization and surveillance.
We have just witnessed an unprecedented and appalling moment in our history. We urge Congress to pass a resolution to thwart this attempt at a national emergency. When it comes to the safety and dignity of hundreds of thousands of people, there can be no more room for compromise.”
