(Washington, D.C.) Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development proposed a regulatory change that will allow landlords, mortgage companies, and other housing providers to secretly discriminate against women, children, people of color, and other renters and would-be homeowners. The proposed rule, if finalized and implemented, will gut one of the nation’s most vital tools for addressing and preventing housing discrimination, which will have far-reaching consequences for communities across the country.

Below is a statement from Fatima Goss Graves, President/CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) regarding the proposed rule change:

“Having stable housing is core to a person’s ability to be healthy and succeed at work and in school. Yet, the Trump-Pence administration is trying to gut anti-discrimination protections that allow women, people of color, survivors of domestic violence, families with children, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and low-income people to find housing and become homeowners.

“Today, the administration has proposed legalizing discriminatory practices in housing, and we’re under no delusion that it will stop there. This is the latest in an ongoing attack on civil rights protections in other areas such as education, employment, and health. People in this country deserve free and fair access to a broad range of economic and social opportunities—we must fight against this wrongheaded rule.”
