NWLC Reacts to Trump Administration Finalizing Backdoor Abortion Ban
(Washington, D.C.) Today, the Trump Administration finalized a rule that will take insurance coverage of abortion away from patients. The rule places burdensome regulations on insurers to dissuade them from offering abortion coverage, and will cause confusion among consumers, leading to people no longer having coverage they may need. This rule could result in as many as 3.1 million women who purchase their health plan on the Affordable Care Act marketplaces losing critical coverage of abortion.
The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“This is yet another attempt by this Administration to ban abortion. All health insurance plans should cover all basic health services – and that includes abortion. Losing this coverage can force people to delay care, and can push families into deep financial strain or even poverty. All in all, this rule puts patients’ health, economic security, and future wellbeing in danger. We will work until everyone has insurance coverage for all their pregnancy-related care, including abortion.”
