NWLC Reacts to Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) Being Signed into Law

(Washington, D.C.) The following is a statement from Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center:

“The Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) was signed into law today by President Biden, and this is a crucial way to help ensure greater protections for LGBTQ married couples given the risks in our current moment. We are grateful that the RMA will guarantee that same-sex and interracial married couples will continue to receive federal benefits and that all states will have to recognize marriages from other states, regardless of any future undermining of rights by the Supreme Court. There is still more progress to be made, and we hope that Congress moves forward to enact the Equality Act which would protect LGBTQ people’s civil rights in a range of important contexts.”
