NWLC Demands Justice for Women at Irwin County Detention Center

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“It is horrifying that ICE is violating and terrorizing people’s bodies within a system that already devalues human life. Those at the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia, and all people in detention facilities regardless of their immigration status, deserve justice, healing, and respect. Centers like Irwin County Detention Center, as with our country’s prison systems as they currently stand, do not serve us or advance our country’s democratic principles. The shameful lack of medical care and the indignity and trauma of forced, government-sanctioned sterilization of Black, Latinx and Indigenous people, as well as people living with disabilities, is a part of our country’s past and present. It must be confronted and those responsible must be held accountable.”
