NWLC Commends Senate For Prioritizing Advancing Judicial Confirmations
November 13, 2024 — Senate Democrats confirmed two more federal judges as soon as they came back into session this week: April M. Perry to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and Jonathan Hawley to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois.
“We commend Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Senate Democrats for prioritizing the confirmation of fair, qualified judges while they still lead their chamber. As our courts face historic challenges under the incoming administration, these confirmations are absolutely crucial for protecting the freedoms and civil liberties of all Americans,” said Angel Padilla, vice president for strategy and policy at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC).
“Now more than ever, we need judges who will uphold our Constitution, counter authoritarian threats, and serve as a check against abuses of power – including by those coming directly from the White House. The window for confirming judges is closing fast and we urge Senate Democrats to leave no judge behind. We remain dedicated to ending the relentless attacks on our freedom, health, and equality, and we will continue fighting for a judiciary committed to justice for all.”
