NWLC Applauds Biden’s Judicial Nominations
(Washington, D.C.) Today, President Biden announced his choice of 10 judicial nominees to serve as Federal Circuit and District Court judges, and one nominee to serve as a Superior Court Judge for the District of Columbia.
The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“President Biden’s first slate of judicial nominees—all highly-qualified and respected individuals—is a reflection of not only the diversity and lived experiences of people in this country, but the values we hold true as a nation. We are thrilled that of the 11 nominees announced today, nine are women, seven of whom are women of color—including the first Black woman Federal Circuit judge, the first AAPI woman to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of D.C., and the first woman of color to serve as a federal judge for the District of Maryland. This is an important step toward a more fair and diverse judiciary—currently, women make up only 34% of the federal judiciary, and women of color a mere 7%. This is also an important step to undo the harms inflicted upon the judiciary after four years of awarding lifetime court appointments to overwhelmingly white, male extremists. We must get to work immediately to restore trust in this powerful institution, and we applaud the administration for prioritizing the selection, nomination, and confirmation of these nominees. We urge the Senate to do the same, and give these nominees the fair and respectful treatment they deserve.”
