Policymakers have prioritized tax cuts for the top 1%, giving us a tax code that fails to raise adequate revenues, disproportionately benefits the wealthiest and big corporations, and contains too few tax provisions that increase racial, gender, and economic equity.
Today’s tax code allows the rich to get richer and leave everyone else behind. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We can harness the full potential of the tax code to advance gender and racial equity by ensuring those at the top pay their fair share in taxes which would raise more federal revenues to support investments in women and families. A fair tax code could support an economy that works better for everyday women and families. We can change the tax code’s outdated and biased assumptions about family structures, marriage, participation in the paid workforce, and more that disadvantage women, people of color, and families with low incomes.
