Moms get that money doesn’t grow on trees. They work tirelessly to provide for their families and are often breadwinners or co-breadwinners in their households. Yet it’s 2018, and mothers who work outside the home still have to work nearly 5 months longer than fathers to be paid the same amount.
That’s right: mothers are paid just 71 cents for every dollar paid to fathers and next week Wednesday, May 30 marks the day when the typical income of a mother will catch up to what a father made in 2017 alone.
Like me, you may have already known that women overall make just 80 cents for every dollar paid to men. But the fact that the wage gap widens just because someone becomes a mother really doesn’t sit well with me, especially when we consider what mothers of color make as compared to white, non-Hispanic fathers.
And despite these wide gaps – many moms of color fare even worse depending on the state they live in. Here is a roundup of the worst states for moms by race/ethnicity:
Asian/Pacific Islander Moms
Nationally, Asian/Pacific Islander mothers make just 85 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads. But they fare worst in Alaska, where they make just 46 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads.
Black Moms
Nationally, Black mothers make just 54 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads. But they fare worst in the District of Columbia, where they make just 35 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads.
Latina Moms
Nationally, Latina moms make just 46 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads. But they fare worst in the District of Columbia, where they make just 24 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads.
Native Moms
Nationally, Native mothers make just 49 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads. But they fare worst in Colorado, where they make just 39 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads.
White, non-Hispanic Moms
Nationally, white, non-Hispanic mothers make just 69 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads. But they fare worst in Utah, where they make just 61 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic dads.
A clear message from all of us moms, and especially us mothers of color, to our states: It’s time to clean up your act and take steps to finally close the wage gap.
