On September 4, 2025, National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), League of Women Voters, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), National Urban League, and Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in Louisiana v. Callais. The brief argues that the government has a compelling interest in protecting voting rights through Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and that application of Section 2 to require voting district maps that prevent dilution of Black citizens’ votes is constitutional.
“This case before the Court is a transparent attempt to dilute the voting power of the most influential voting bloc in America: Black women,” said Alison Gill, Director of Nominations & Democracy at the National Women’s Law Center. “When their vote is diluted, it paves the way for other attacks on women, including on our reproductive rights, workplace protections, and basic need programs. We strongly urge the Supreme Court to uphold our democratic institutions and reject efforts that would drag us back to the 1960s by allowing states to suppress a person’s right to vote based on their race.”
