The National Women’s Law Center and law firm DLA Piper submitted an amicus brief to the Missouri Supreme Court in support of a transgender boy  in R.M.A. (minor child) v. Blue R-IV School District, et al. The question on appeal is whether sex discrimination under the Missouri Human Rights Act includes discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The brief argues that discrimination on the basis of gender identity is inherently sex discrimination and discriminates on the basis of sex stereotypes, and it charts the ways that “protective” policies have been disingenuously used to hurt the rights of oppressed groups, including women themselves. Nearly 30 allies, including organizations dedicated to civil rights, educational opportunities, and gender equality, signed the brief.
