Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to pass an appropriations bill that gives women and families many reasons to celebrate, including by protecting and investing in reproductive health care and expanding access to high-quality, affordable child care.
Critically, the bill blocks the Trump administration’s refusal of care rule—which would allow providers’ personal beliefs to dictate patient care. The bill also funds and protects the Title X family planning program and other critical programs that bolster access to reproductive health care. However, the bill also includes the Hyde and Weldon Amendments, which restrict abortion access. NWLC is committed to working with members of Congress to eliminate those measures and ensure that abortion care is accessible no matter where you live or your income.
An increase of $2.4 billion for the Child Care and Development Block Grant continues in the tradition of last year’s historic victory. This funding will make a tangible difference for families nationwide, as this funding increase could make high-quality child care available for hundreds of thousands more children.
This year, Congress has the opportunity to make high-quality, affordable child care and ensuring access to reproductive health care a national priority. It is gratifying to see that the House takes that opportunity seriously, passing a bill that makes critical investments in improving the lives of women and families. We encourage the Senate to follow the House’s lead.
