Trump’s Draconian Rule Will Take Food Away from Women and Families

(Washington, D.C.) Today, the Trump administration finalized a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rule that will take SNAP away from nearly 700,000 unemployed and underemployed people and their families. There is a harsh requirement limiting SNAP to three months for certain adults unless they get and report at least 20 hours of work each week. This new rule will undercut states’ ability to waive this requirement. This action circumvents Congress’s success last year passing a Farm Bill that protects SNAP.

The following is a statement by Melissa Boteach, Vice-President for Income Security and Child Care/Early Learning at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“This rule is appalling. Two years after Trump signed massive tax cuts for the wealthy and one year after Congress passed a Farm Bill that protects SNAP, the administration has just finalized a rule that will take food away from hundreds of thousands of women and families. Women face the brunt of an employment system plagued by a wage gap, unpredictable schedules, and pervasive sexual harassment and retaliation. The administration’s ruthless action takes none of this into consideration and must be blocked immediately. We will fully support lawsuits that seek to stop this draconian rule from ever going into effect.”
