Trump Administration Pushes for FDA Review of Medication Abortion, Threatening Access Nationwide
WASHINGTON, DC (May 15, 2025) — During a Senate HELP Committee hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. announced that he has directed the Food and Drug Administration to conduct a comprehensive review of its regulations on mifepristone — a medication used in nearly two-thirds of abortions across the country.
In response, Katie O’Connor, senior director of federal abortion policy at NWLC, issued the following statement:
“Mifepristone has been proven safe through more than two decades of peer-reviewed research and real-world data from over 7.5 million people who have used the medication for abortion and miscarriage care. The nation’s leading medical authorities, including the American Medical Association, recognize mifepristone as one of the safest medications in clinical use.
This call for a review is part of a coordinated campaign by the anti-abortion movement, not a response to science or public health. The vast majority of Americans support access to abortion, including medication abortion. Lawmakers should stop imposing personal ideologies on the public and instead listen to their constituents by protecting access to essential care.
