PRESS RELEASE: NWLC and Nearly 70 Organizations Call Pete Hegseth “Wholly Unfit” to Lead DOD

Washington, DC – More than 65 civil rights, labor, health, and other organizations, led by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) and Military Reform Coalition, are calling Pete Hegseth “wholly unfit” to become the next Secretary of Defense.

In a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee ahead of today’s nomination hearing for Hegseth, the groups outline concerns about his suitability for the role, citing a troubling history of misogyny, sexual harassment, and hostility against a diverse and inclusive military.

“Pete Hegseth is not just unqualified for the role of Defense Secretary – he poses a direct threat to the safety and well-being of service members, civilian personnel, and dependents. We strongly urge senators to prioritize the security of our nation, as well as the well-being and dignity of military families, by rejecting his nomination,” said Jackii Wang, senior legislative analyst at NWLC.

If appointed, Hegseth would oversee the welfare of millions of service members and their families, posing a threat to women, LGBTQIA+ people, and people of color who represent a significant portion of our military.
