NWLC Urges Congress to Lift Deadline on the Equal Rights Amendment

(Washington, D.C.) Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote to lift the deadline on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The ERA would guarantee equal legal rights for all people in this country, regardless of sex. Just last month, Virginia became the 38th state to approve the ERA to the U.S. Constitution. Despite this vote, the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice has tried to stop the ERA from becoming a part of the Constitution, claiming that Congress cannot extend the deadline.

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“There should be no deadline on gender equality. It is a core mission of the Trump administration to not only hold up our fight for equality, but actively push us back in time. We urge Congress to make clear its commitment to equal rights by lifting the deadline and working to ensure that the ERA become a part of our country’s foundational documents.”
