NWLC Supports Reintroduction of the EACH Act to Restore Abortion Coverage

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressional Democrats introduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act.

This bill would repeal the Hyde Amendment and other harmful bans that block insurance coverage of abortion through federal programs. For decades, these bans have deprived people who rely on Medicaid and other public health insurance from accessing reproductive health care.

Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, issued the following statement:

“Since the Supreme Court wrongly overturned Roe v. Wade, extremist lawmakers have escalated their efforts to ban and restrict abortion. Earlier this month, Trump and Senate Republicans passed a budget reconciliation bill aimed at defunding Planned Parenthood and stripping insurance coverage from people in this country who need it most. This is just the latest example of how far they are willing to go to interfere in people’s personal health care decisions. When abortion isn’t covered by insurance, people are forced to pay out of pocket or continue with pregnancies they don’t want or can’t afford. The EACH Act addresses this significant barrier by ensuring abortion coverage for people who get their health care or insurance through the federal government, so that everyone can access the care they need when they need it without political interference. We’re grateful to Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sens. Tammy Duckworth, Mazie Hirono, and Patty Murray for leading this critical legislation.”
