NWLC Statement on Trump’s Executive Order Seeking to Repeal Core Tenet of Civil Rights Act
Washington, DC (April 23) – Donald Trump signed an executive order to roll back the protections afforded to Americans against discrimination that has a “disparate impact” based on race, sex, or other protected characteristics and that is not otherwise justified. The prohibition of disparate impact discrimination has for decades been a core protection provided by our nation’s civil rights laws.
Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, released the following statement in response:
“This executive order instructs the government to stop enforcing key civil rights protections — in the workplace, at schools, and in all aspects of our society — and to rewrite regulations that have protected the rights of all people for decades.
“This order is part of Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to dismantle our freedoms and roll back our rights. He hates that civil rights laws give us the power to stand up to bullies like him. But a president does not have the power to take away core civil right protections from the people of this country with a flick of his wrist.
“In less than 100 days, the Trump administration has swung a sledgehammer at the very foundations of our democracy – attempting to clear a path for a government ruled not by and for the people, but by and for one man. The National Women’s Law Center exists to defend and protect women and girls, and that includes standing firm in our defense of the law’s promise of equality. We will continue to use every path available to us to fight back against the President’s authoritarian agenda and to defend our hard-won rights from this administration’s near constant attacks.”
