NWLC Statement on Federal Charges Against Representative LaMonica McIver

Washington, DC – Following a federal grand jury indictment of Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey over an incident at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Newark last month, Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, released the following statement.

“The charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver are not just baseless — they’re an attack on our Constitution’s separation of powers. As a democratically elected member of Congress, Rep. McIver had both the legal right and the responsibility to enter that immigration facility as part of her oversight duties. This indictment is nothing more than a blatant act of political retaliation — an authoritarian move meant to prevent accountability and silence dissent. And it comes on the heels of Donald Trump threatening to arrest California Gov. Gavin Newsom for doing his job and pushing back on the deployment of the U.S. military against Californians. This is yet another example of Trump weaponizing the justice system to punish his critics and shield himself from accountability.”
