NWLC Responds to Providence Hospital’s Agreement to Follow California Emergency Abortion Care Laws

October 29, 2024 — Providence Hospital agreed in a court filing yesterday to comply with California law requiring emergency abortion care. This comes as a result of a lawsuit by the state’s attorney general for illegally denying care to patients, including our client, Anna Nusslock.

K.M. Bell, senior litigation counsel at the National Women’s Law Center and Nusslock’s attorney, issued the following statement:

“Providence’s agreement to comply with the law is welcome, but it does nothing to address the harm they caused by denying emergency abortion care to our client. We know that Anna is not the only one; evidence in court filings shows that Providence has failed to comply with the law and refused to treat patients who were miscarrying at least three times in recent years; one local doctor estimates that Providence has refused emergency abortion care at least once or twice a year. Nevertheless, we are glad the hospital has promised in court it will care for pregnant patients in crisis, including when the care they need is an abortion, because ignoring the law’s requirements is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. No hospital should be able to hide behind religious policies at the cost of patients’ lives and health.

Anna Nusslock added:

“We are watching closely to ensure Providence keeps its promise. I am incredibly thankful for all of the support I’ve received from my community thus far. I would encourage anyone who has experienced a denial of emergency abortion care by Providence – or does in the future – to come forward to help hold them accountable.”
