NWLC Responds to Justice Kennedy’s Retirement from the Supreme Court

The following is a statement from Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center:

“Justice Kennedy’s retirement sounds the alarm over the future of civil rights in this country. For decades, Kennedy has been a swing vote on the Court, at times voting to uphold our most critical rights and protections. But we know whoever President Trump nominates next will not take this approach. The President has repeatedly promised to only nominate justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade, and be in the mold of Justice Scalia who rejected the application to women of the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection of the law. Make no mistake, Kennedy’s retirement means the balance of the court will shift, setting back people’s rights – including women, people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ individuals – for an entire generation. The stakes have never been higher. It’s time to fight hard for the future of our democracy.”
