NWLC Reacts to Supreme Court’s Decision to Review Abortion Case

(Washington, D.C.) Today, the Supreme Court of the United States decided to review an erroneous Fifth Circuit decision on abortion. June Medical Services v. Gee is a challenge to an anti-abortion Louisiana law virtually identical to the Texas law struck down by the Court in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt , which the Court found to be unconstitutional just three years ago.

The following is a statement by Gretchen Borchelt, Vice President for Reproductive Rights and Health at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“For over four decades, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed an individual’s constitutional right to abortion – and this time should be no different. An identical law was already struck down by the Supreme Court, and the Fifth Circuit’s decision in this case clearly departed from binding precedent and the rule of law. Just as it did three years ago, the Court should recognize the harm this law poses to the fundamental right to abortion and strike it down. Women in Louisiana and across the country are counting on the Court to protect their right to abortion – and their health, equality, and freedom.”
