NWLC Reacts to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Stepping Down from Party Leadership
(Washington, D.C.) The following is a statement from Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center:
“On behalf of all of us at the National Women’s Law Center, I want to extend our deep gratitude to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and celebrate her tremendous legacy. Speaker Pelosi paved the way for so many by being the first and only woman to serve as Speaker of the House, and she spent nearly two decades leading the Democratic caucus. Her leadership was the cornerstone of passing the Affordable Care Act, creating key consumer protections and enabling millions of people in this country to have access to quality, affordable health care; leading the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, helping to eliminate barriers for the LGBTQ+ community; and passing the American Rescue Plan and other vital relief packages during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout all of this work, she has consistently recognized that women’s success and wellbeing–and their reproductive freedom and autonomy–are necessary to our nation’s success and well-being, underscoring that unless and until we make progress for women of color, women with low incomes, and LGBTQ people, our work is incomplete. As she continues her historic career, we honor the progress she achieved–and all that’s yet to come–and look forward to working with the next generation of congressional leaders to advance gender justice.”
