NWLC Reacts to Andrea Lucas’ Confirmation to EEOC

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Senate confirmed Andrea Lucas to a second term as a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The National Women’s Law Center Action Fund authored a letter, joined by more than 70 civil rights organizations, calling for the Senate to reject Lucas’ nomination.

Earlier this week, the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) and Democracy Forward also  filed a lawsuit against the EEOC and Lucas for unlawfully refusing to enforce federal workplace protections for transgender workers.

The following is a statement by Emily Martin, chief program officer for NWLC:

“Lucas has made it crystal clear that she is an ally to Trump but a danger to workers. In her time at the EEOC, Lucas has abandoned workers at every turn and left them without protection, including women workers, transgender and nonbinary workers, and workers of color. We’re disturbed that despite her record and recent actions, Congress has given her the greenlight to do more harm.

“Just days ago, we filed a lawsuit against the EEOC and Lucas for discriminating against transgender workers, and we will continue to hold her accountable to EEOC’s mission and to working people throughout her term. At a time when people across the country are already struggling to make ends meet and find stability at work, we will fight to ensure they’re able to work safely, free from harassment and discrimination.”
