NWLC on Trump’s Order to Destroy Public Education

WASHINGTON, DC (March 20) – President Trump’s executive order today to gut the Department of Education is an attack on women, children, workers, educators, and families. It also attempts to fulfill a clear goal of Project 2025

Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) issued the following response:

“President Trump’s attempt to dismantle the Department of Education represents his ultimate goal — to destroy public education, destabilize communities, attack civil rights, undermine democracy and an informed electorate, and erase pathways to the middle class for millions of people. Extremists have been trying for decades to eliminate the Department of Education, unsuccessfully, because this  would require an act of Congress. Now, the Trump administration is attempting an end run around Congress to pick the Department apart, piece by piece. This backdoor attack on our country’s students, educators, and democracy cannot stand.

“Without the Department of Education, there would be no federal oversight to ensure schools are safe, inclusive, and equitable; there would be deep cuts to funding for federal student loans and for schools that need resources to support its students, and a rollback of civil rights protections for students and less accountability for discrimination. We will continue to protect the rights of students and teachers as the Trump administration actively works against them.”
