WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 14) – Emily Martin, the chief program officer of the National Women’s Law Center, denounced the nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz to become the nation’s next attorney general. Gaetz—who has been accused of sexual abuse and sex trafficking—is “utterly unqualified” for the role, she said.
“He was very recently under investigation for sex trafficking by the same Justice Department that he hopes to lead. He’s currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee based on credible allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor, illicit drug use, and trying to block government investigations of his conduct, among other charges. And he apparently resigned from the House yesterday to try to block the Ethics Committee’s release of its findings. The Senate and the country deserve to see the full report ahead of considering such a disastrous nominee.
“Moreover, his public statements and legislative record demonstrate a consistent and vile contempt for women. He also was one of the organizers of the January 6, 2021 rally that ultimately turned into a violent insurrection. No one with such a damning track record is equipped to become the nation’s top law enforcement officer and head of the Department of Justice.”
