NWLC Fact Sheet: Single Moms, Women of Color Disproportionately Harmed by SNAP Cuts

Washington, DC – A new fact sheet from the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) reveals that cuts to federal food assistance, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are disproportionately harming women. An NWLC analysis of the most recent latest available SNAP data finds that women are likely overrepresented among the 3.5 million people who have already lost benefits, with particularly severe impacts on single mothers and women of color.

“SNAP helps millions of women feed their families, especially women who are raising families on their own. Kicking them off food assistance so that billionaires can get more tax breaks is simply cruel,” said Courtney Anderson, fellow of income security at NWLC. “We are deeply concerned that the cuts to SNAP are already hurting families most vulnerable to hunger. Congress must reverse these cuts to SNAP to ensure that no woman or child goes to bed hungry.”

Key Findings:

  • Women make up the majority (58%) of SNAP recipients.
  • Women of color make up one-third (33%of total adults on the program.
  • Two-thirds (67%of families with children who rely on SNAP are headed by a single adult, and of those single adults, 86% are single moms.

Last year, NWLC and the Food Research and Action Center released a report showing how the expanded work reporting requirements in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) will disproportionately hurt  workers in the low-paid workforce, where women, especially women of color, are overrepresented. Women also are more likely to work part-time and disproportionately shoulder caregiving responsibilities, which is particularly true for single moms.
