NWLC Condemns Trump Rule Attacking Health Care for Trans Youth Under Medicaid and CHIP
Washington, DC – The Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services finalized a rule today that seeks to restrict access to health care for transgender youth under Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in one of the most dangerous escalations of its anti-trans agenda to date.
“Once again, Donald Trump is trying to score political points by endangering the health and wellbeing of trans youth,” said Ma’ayan Anafi, senior counsel for health equity and justice at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC). “This administration has consistently put ideology before science. Now, it is jeopardizing vital health care—proven to be safe, effective, and even life-saving for many transgender people—all to further its campaign of prejudice and lies, stigmatize trans youth, and vilify the families and providers who support them.”
Nearly 35,000 comments — overwhelmingly in opposition — were submitted in response to this rule. NWLC submitted a comprehensive comment outlining how the rule would jeopardize the health and safety of trans youth, relies on misinformation, and conflicts with legal requirements that protect young people’s access to medically necessary care.
