NWLC Condemns Arizona’s Near-Total Abortion Ban
The following is a statement by Gretchen Borchelt, Vice President for Reproductive Rights & Health at the National Women’s Law Center:
“We’re horrified by the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to resurrect a 19th century abortion ban. This ruling reflects a dangerous trend of extremists bringing back outdated and discriminatory laws that intentionally hurt millions of people.
Let’s be clear: This is about attacking our basic rights and fundamental freedoms. Extreme anti-abortion politicians, activists, and judges are pushing an agenda that aims to control people’s bodies and take away their individual freedoms.
The vast majority of people in this country do not support abortion bans. They want the freedom to make their own decisions, define their own path, and safely care for their families and communities. That’s why every single time abortion has been put to voters since Roe v. Wade was overturned, voters have protected abortion rights and access. We commend the organizers in Arizona who have been collecting signatures for a ballot measure to do the same.”
