NWLC Condemns Alabama’s Near-Total Abortion Ban

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):

“The cruel Alabama law that passed last night is blatantly unconstitutional. After decades of chipping away at Roe, anti-abortion legislators and advocates are feeling emboldened with the addition of Justice Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court and they are exposing their true goal – to ban abortion altogether. And make no mistake, this dangerous action today is extreme overreach: the vast majority of people in this country do not support criminalizing women or doctors and want abortion to be safe and legal. In fact, women and families across America are demanding action from their legislators to address the real crises facing their communities. They want affordable health care and child care. They want to end maternal mortality and climate change. They want to stop sexual harassment and violence, and they don’t want families to be separated and put in to cages. What people want is a safe, clean, and nurturing world for their families. This abortion ban does nothing to center the needs or wants of people in this country and is simply political posturing designed to advance the platforms of problematic lawmakers in power. The National Women’s Law Center will continue to advance gender justice, and fight – alongside our local and state partners – attempts to undermine people’s constitutional right to abortion.”
