NWLC Celebrates Historic Abortion Ballot Wins Amid Setback in Florida

November 5, 2024Today, voters demonstrated overwhelming support for abortion rights and access. In Maryland, New York, and Colorado, voters approved measures to protect and expand reproductive freedom in those three states. Although a measure in Florida narrowly fell short, a clear majority of voters there expressed strong support for restoring abortion access in their state.

In response, Gretchen Borchelt, vice president for reproductive rights and health at NWLC, issued the following statement:

“Abortion rights is proving to be a defining issue in this election, and today, voters sent a powerful message: the right to control our bodies and futures is non-negotiable. Elected officials have been given a mandate to restore and protect reproductive freedom.

“In New York, the state constitution will now include the nation’s most expansive and inclusive equality provision, recognizing the fundamental truth that abortion access is essential for women’s equality. Maryland voters enshrined reproductive rights in their state constitution, safeguarding those rights for the future. And Colorado voters enshrined abortion rights while also securing abortion access for everyone, no matter their income.

“As we celebrate these monumental wins, we know there is still work to be done. Despite the majority of Floridians voting in favor of protecting abortion access, the state remains under a harsh 6-week ban, which will impact countless people there. NWLC remains committed to ensuring abortion is available and accessible to everyone, and we look forward to seeing the results in the six additional states that are deciding whether to protect abortion access.”
