NWLC Applauds Confirmation of 235 Judicial Nominees
Washington, DC — Today, the Biden administration and the Senate reached a significant milestone with the confirmation of its 235th judicial nominee.
In response, Angel Padilla, vice president of strategy and policy at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), issued the following statement:
“We commend Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Judiciary Chair Richard Durbin, and the Senate for confirming 235 lifetime judges, including 150 women and 89 women of color. These historic confirmations reflect our nation’s rich diversity and commitment to equal justice. Notable confirmations include Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman and former public defender appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and Nicole Berner, the first LGBTQ+ judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.
Over the past four years, President Biden and his administration have prioritized the appointment of fair-minded judges, significantly increasing the gender, racial, and professional diversity of the judiciary. However, while we celebrate this progress, there is still work to do. Several highly qualified nominees—including Adeel Mangi for the 3rd Circuit, Karla Campbell for the 6th Circuit, and other pending Circuit Court nominees—still await votes. These circuit court judges deserve a vote, in particular, Mangi, whose nomination is being derailed by disgusting Islamophobic and bigoted attacks against his character. Allowing Mangi’s nomination to fail sets a dangerous precedent and sends a message that discrimination is an effective tactic in the Senate.
We urge the Senate to act quickly in advancing pending nominations to ensure our judiciary continues to reflect and serve the people it represents.”
