Y’all, it’s been a rough few months.
First, anti-abortion extremists spread lies about later in pregnancy abortion, demonizing health care providers and women seeking this care. Second, states just started banning abortion outright, like that is a thing they can do (it’s not, as one judge indicated as much on Tuesday). Third, these bans come after a decade-long effort by the very same states to shut down clinics, force doctors to lie to their patients when seeking health care, require medically unnecessary procedures, and restrict insurance coverage of abortion.
So what happens now? Well, y’all are definitely fighting back. You are rallying, sharing your abortion story, yelling in the halls of state legislatures, publishing your stories and thoughts in newspapers, and donating to abortion funds. A mix of rage, fear, and strength is being funneled into righteous action. And it’s incredible.
And some Members of Congress are right there with you. They showed up to the rallies. They signed their names to a resolution affirming the right to abortion. And they cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill that would create a federal safeguard against abortion bans and medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion. We applaud the 171 Members of the House of Representatives and 42 Senators who cosponsored this bill.
We appreciate that they are showing up when we need them the most and look forward to the passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act.
For our dignity, for our equality, for our lives, we demand it.
