House Approves NDAA with Harmful Anti-Transgender Provision
December 11, 2024 – Today, the House voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes a harmful provision targeting essential medical care for transgender military family members.
In response, Jackii Wang, senior legislative analyst at the National Women’s Law Center, issued the following statement:
“Today’s vote is a devastating setback for military families – even with the inclusion of a key fix for contraceptive access. Once again, transgender people are being targeted in a calculated attempt to sow fear and division for political gain. This decision will leave military families vulnerable, forcing them to either navigate an already challenging health care system or leave the military altogether to help their children get the care they need. It’s a betrayal of the trust placed in our leaders to protect and support all who serve this country and their loved ones. While we are deeply disheartened, this fight is far from over. The bill now goes onto the Senate, where we will continue advocating for transgender youth of military families to have the health care access and rights they deserve. We urge Senators to vote against the NDAA given the inclusion of this provision.”
