Confirmation of Kenneth Marcus as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Would Jeopardize Civil Rights for All Students, Says NWLC

(Washington, D.C.)  Tomorrow, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) will vote on Kenneth Marcus’s nomination to become Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education.

The following is a statement by Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center (NLWC):

“It will be bad news for students across the country if Kenneth Marcus is confirmed as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the Department of Education. Marcus supports Secretary Betsy DeVos’s attack on the rights of sexual assault survivors. He has expressed marked indifference about the rights of undocumented and LGBTQ students to attend school and learn in a safe environment. He condones the use of regressive sex stereotypes to justify sex-segregated education. And he opposes the use of affirmative action to redress historical and present-day discrimination. As the Trump administration continues its orchestrated attacks on our nation’s civil rights, it’s more critical than ever that the Office for Civil Rights be led by someone who’s committed to protecting the civil rights of all students.”
