Record high waitlists for childcare assistance have shut women out of work and promotions

Thousands of families across the country have found themselves in a similar situation. The number of children on state-run waitlists for childcare subsidies nearly doubled between early 2024 and early 2025, with many lists continuing to grow throughout 2025, according to a May report from the National Women’s Law Center. That’s the largest year-to-year increase since the nonprofit group started compiling the data two decades ago.
