The National Women’s Law Center and more than 60 undersigned organizations offered comments in opposition to the Department of Education’s (ED) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would make unlawful changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program and would allow the Secretary to determine an employer to be ineligible to participate in PSLF if it engages in activities that have a “substantial illegal purpose.” This move unlawfully expands the Department’s power and weaponizes a program that has assisted student loan debt from borrowers employed by public service organizations, including non-profits, the military, the Peace Corps, local and state governments, and social services. This is an attempt to unconstitutionally target organizations that have viewpoints that diverge from the Administration’s. We strongly urge the Department of Education to withdraw this Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.
