NWLC joined an amicus brief filed on April 4, 2025, in Hickson v. St. David’s Health Care. The amicus brief supports a case brought on behalf of Michael Hickson, a 46-year-old Black man with disabilities. Mr. Hickson died a preventable death in 2020 when his doctors abruptly withdrew life-sustaining care for COVID-19, asserting that, due to his disabilities, his quality of life was too low to justify treatment. The amicus brief presents evidence of the pervasive discrimination in health care facing disabled people and Black people, including Black disabled people. And it explains why Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which prohibits disability discrimination in federally funded entities, clearly prohibits discrimination in medical decision-making.
