Dear Senators Grassley and Durbin:
On behalf of the National Women’s Law Center (the “Law Center”), an organization that has advocated on behalf of women and girls for over fifty years, we write in strong opposition to the nomination of Ms. Whitney Hermandorfer to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Ms. Hermandorfer has been nominated for a circuit court judgeship, a high-level role with appellate authority to review district court decisions, for which the American Bar Association (ABA) generally recommends at least twelve years of experience in the practice of law, with most nominees having considerably more.1 Ms. Hermandorfer does not meet this basic level of experience. Similarly, the ABA stresses that appellate court nominees “should possess an especially high degree of legal scholarship,”2 and yet Ms. Hermandorfer has virtually none.
