Trump’s week of transphobic actions harms all women, girls, and LGBTQI+ people
(WASHINGTON) April 4 — The Trump administration’s announcement today of a Title IX “special investigation team” is a preposterous, thinly-veiled attempt to erase protections for transgender students in schools. And it comes after a vile, transphobic proclamation that equates providing gender affirming care for kids to child abuse.
The following is a statement from Shiwali Patel, senior director of safe and inclusive schools at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“It has been clear from day one that President Trump and his administration do not care about women’s and girls’ rights. Instead, they are seeking to enforce an unlawful, narrow version of Title IX that is rooted in harmful stereotypes and attempts to demonize students who deserve a safe and inclusive education. Students who are not attempting to weaponize Title IX or use it as a political tool – including student survivors – will most likely not have the resources of this so-called special investigation team.
“This latest action by the Trump administration is wasteful of critical, and now sparse, federal resources and does nothing to protect gender equity in schools and sports. Rather, it deliberately goes after trans kids with the intent to make them suffer. We will not stop advocating for all students to receive the education and justice that they deserve.”
