Trump’s Latest Comments Directed at Four U.S. Congresswomen Are Transparently Racist
This past weekend, in response to criticism of the outrageous conditions in ICE detention facilities amidst promises of mass ICE raids, arrests, and deportations, Donald Trump tweeted that “‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe…” should “…go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Three of the four Congresswomen in question were born here in the United States and all four are U.S. citizens.
The following is a statement by NWLC President and CEO, Fatima Goss Graves:
“Donald Trump and his administration have a lot to answer for when it comes to the treatment of women and girls, of immigrants of color, and everyone with whom he disagrees. Trump’s latest comments directed at four U.S. Congresswomen are transparently racist and are unfortunately reflective of the deeply bigoted nature of his immigration policies — indeed, of too many of his policies across the board.
“Instead of being a leader for the country as a whole, he has decided to appeal to a xenophobic minority of voters by ramping up his already-traumatic attacks on immigrants of color, including women and children fleeing gender-based violence. It is noteworthy, too, that he has chosen this moment — when he is the subject of yet another accusation of sexual violence from a reporter, as well as renewed interest in prior accusations connected to his past relationship with accused pedophile and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein — to launch these high-profile attacks.
“Enough is enough. The very fabric of our democracy is at stake. We call upon everyone in this country, and particularly members of Congress and other leaders, to take urgent action to stop this campaign to harm immigrant families in this country.”
