TODAY: NWLC Responds to Department Of Labor Hearing
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer will be testifying before the House Education and the Workforce Committee at a hearing titled: “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Labor.”
The Department of Labor interprets and enforces laws vital to women’s economic security and right to be free from workplace discrimination. However, the Trump administration has undermined its critical role, including by gutting the offices within DOL that enforce antidiscrimination protections and address challenges faced by women in the workplace, and eliminating grants that help women access high-paying jobs and address violence and harassment at work. The administration’s proposed budget would only further undermine the agency and the rights of workers, especially women and workers of color.
The following is a statement by Lauren Khouri, Senior Director of Workplace Equality and Senior Counsel at the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC):
“Since day one, the Trump administration has undermined the core purpose and mission of DOL at every turn. From attacking key civil rights protections to reducing equal employment opportunities to inhibiting worker power, the Trump DOL is setting back progress and making it harder for all workers, especially women, workers of color, LGBTQI+ workers, and workers with disabilities, to access good jobs and support themselves and their families. Workers and their families deserve answers. It is critical that Committee members use today’s hearing to hold Secretary Chavez-DeRemer accountable for these attacks on worker rights.”
